2022 Lake Lowering

October 26, 2022

The valve will be opened on Tuesday, November 1st to begin the lake lowering process.(Weather pending) The Winter pool level will be approximately 4 feet lower than the normal summer pool level.

The lake is lowered for several reasons. The main reasons include the protection of shorelines from ice, to allow for easier access to make repairs to shorelines and docks, and to relieve pressure on the dam.

Of course, the weather is the main driver in when, and if, the water reaches winter pool. It generally takes 2-3 weeks for the lake to lower to winter pool. If we experience periods of rain then it will take longer.

We can not control how fast the water lowers. The valve will be completely open through the winter months.

Please contact Mike Casimir with any questions on the lake lowering process. (740-837-0833)

Fly away Geese!

December 23, 2020

Beginning Monday, December 28th, we will be using our Bird Banger noise gun to make the geese around the lake feel uncomfortable. The noise may not make the geese leave immediately. ODNR states the goal during this time of year is to make them feel uncomfortable. This could lead to them deciding to not nest around the lake due to being annoyed or not feeling safe.

The Bird Banger noise gun will be either used by patrol or myself (Mike).

What is that clear blob substances along your dock or boat lift…?

September 30, 2020

Below is a past article from the Lake Water Quality team.  Recently, these “blobs” have been spotted in our lake.  Please read below to learn about it.  Unfortunately, these aerobic animal can cause an issue with your boat intake.  On the other hand, it’s a sign of good water quality.  Hope you find this article helpful.

Blob Sightings

A few residents reported “blobs” growing underwater on their docks and boat lifts late last summer. They looked something like the blob in this picture. Yikes!

As is turns out, this strange thing is not so bad. Eugene C. Braig, Program Director, Aquatic Ecosystems at The Ohio State University says it’s bryozoan colonies. His summary is that “freshwater bryozoans are generally harmless.  Colonies’ ability to clog the intake of equipment that needs to draw water (pumps, etc.) is probably the biggest associated concern.  If anything, freshwater bryozoans imply at least something good about water quality: as aerobic animals, they can only persist in oxygenated water; as filter feeders, they can help to improve water clarity if they occur in relatively high density.” On the other hand, he says that bryozoan colonies don’t put up much defense against being colonized by other organisms. He advises no one deliberately eat bryozoan colonies. Good advice if this crossed anyone’s mind!
