Recently, our staff has started GIS mapping the water distribution system on the west side of the community. We worked on the east side for the first part of the year. Our goal is to create an electronic map of all our service valves to the houses, mainline valves, main lines, and hydrants. This will allow us to better understand the current condition of the components of the system, create an action plan for corrections, and provide a database for the management of the system. Since this software is in the cloud, we can access the map with our smart devices in the field. This will be beneficial when we need to locate valves and main lines.
The mapping is being done in-house. You will continue to see my staff members, Jim Moran, and I in your front yards working on this project through the rest of this year. Click the link below for a sneak peek of what we are putting together. Note that this is a work in progress. We know that some points on the map look off. Those marks will get remarked with our Trimble locating device.
